A book preorder allows readers to place an order before the official publication date. Used well, it creates a public destination for early promotion, gives interested readers a clear next step and helps an author coordinate email, social media, advance-reader outreach and launch-day activity. It is not, however, a substitute for a finished book or a realistic production schedule.
The rules differ by retailer, format and publishing account. Before announcing a date, confirm what the selected platform supports, when the final files are due and what happens if the release must be postponed. A missed deadline can inconvenience readers and may affect future preorder privileges.
Amazon KDP offers preorders for new Kindle eBooks, but not for paperbacks or hardcovers. For print books, KDP provides a scheduled-release option rather than a conventional preorder. Authors should not advertise a KDP print edition as available for preorder when the platform is only holding it for a future release.
For Kindle preorders created on or after September 2, 2026, KDP currently permits a release date up to 18 months in the future and allows up to ten active preorder titles at one time. KDP displays a submission timer in the Bookshelf. The final manuscript must be uploaded and submitted before that deadline; an unsubmitted preorder may be canceled, and repeated problems can affect the account’s ability to use preorders.
Apple Books allows publishers and independent authors to establish preorders through its publishing tools. Its launch guidance currently describes setting a preorder up to 12 months before publication. Authors can prepare the product page, upload files and make permitted updates while organizing the wider campaign.
A strong product page still matters. The cover, description, category information and preview should represent the final book accurately. A long preorder period does not help if the page is incomplete or sends the wrong message to the intended reader.
B&N Press currently supports eBook preorders up to 12 months before publication and print-book preorders up to six months before the publication date. Vendor registration must be completed before creating a preorder. A cover image is required for the product page, while the interior can be supplied later within the platform’s workflow.
Once a B&N Press print publication date is set, the date can be moved farther into the future but not brought forward. Authors should therefore select a date only after reviewing the editing, design, proofing and distribution schedule.
A preorder is most useful when the author has a defined audience and something meaningful to communicate before release. It can support:
A preorder is less helpful when the manuscript is still changing substantially, the cover has not been approved, the audience has not been identified or the author expects the retailer page to generate attention by itself. Preorders create an opportunity; they do not guarantee visibility, rankings or sales.
Start with the intended publication date and work backwards through every production dependency. Include time for developmental or copy editing, proofreading, interior formatting, cover completion, metadata review, file upload, platform processing and physical proof review. Add a contingency period for corrections.
If a paperback and eBook should launch together, the print edition normally needs more preparation. A physical proof can reveal trim, margin, spine, color or paper issues that are easy to miss on screen. Do not choose the earliest technically available date if it leaves no room to correct the product readers will receive.
The public page should answer the reader’s essential questions: What is the book about? Who is it for? Who wrote it? Which format is being ordered? When will it be delivered? Before sharing the link, check the following:
Use the preorder period to provide value rather than repeating the same sales message. A balanced calendar might include an introduction to the book’s central idea, a short excerpt, an author story, a behind-the-scenes production update, an interview, a launch reminder and a thank-you message.
Advance copies may be shared with suitable readers, but any request for a review should welcome an honest opinion and follow the retailer’s current rules. Never require a positive review or offer improper compensation for one. Paid or otherwise material relationships with endorsers should be disclosed clearly.
Retailers may allow some edits during the preorder period, but authors should not treat the live page as a rough draft. Changes to the title, price, description, files or publication date can create inconsistent marketing material and reader confusion. Keep one approved metadata sheet and update every public channel when an authorized change is made.
If a delay becomes unavoidable, act before the platform deadline. Review the retailer’s current postponement rules, update the schedule and communicate clearly with readers. A transparent delay is better than delivering an unfinished or incorrect book.
The US Publisher can help organize editing, cover preparation, interior formatting, metadata, platform submission, advance-reader materials and a coordinated promotional calendar. The right plan depends on the book’s readiness, formats, audience, budget and selected distribution channels.
